International sports campus

Since 2016 the complex of Wegener has transformed from newspaper publisher to international sports campus. International education and sports are being combined in a surrounding where a student athlete can develop himself in both areas. It can be compared to an American university where sportsmen can have school education next to their sports.

Remy de Wit, Dennis Peek and brothers Jan Willem and Teun Bart van Zoest are responsible for this metamorphosis. De Wit has proven himself in top sport in the Netherlands, amongst other things he was national coach of the women’s basketball team. De Wit explains his motivation to found the FSG Academy: “In top sport everything is arranged, when you’re in the sub top, almost nothing is arranged. We wanted to change this. In Apeldoorn we bring together four things for top athletes: sports, education, housing and medical support”.

Collaboration with the region

For both the sports program and the learning program there is a close collaboration with the region. The result is a full offer of all educational types thanks to arrangements with various (inter)national schools.
De Wit: “We think that it is important that every talent can work on both their sport and a degree. The top is very narrow and it is not for everyone. In that case our students will have a degree. This collaboration exists also with various sports clubs in the region. Our people will professionally support them. An added benefit is that we can help reinforcing the level of the clubs. On the campus there are various sports medical companies and apartments where Dutch and foreign talents can stay”.

Growth in top athletes

FSG Academy is certified as World of Sports Academy. There are only 14 of those worldwide (3 in Europe). This has a great appeal to top talents from all over the world. Right now 80 top talents are following the education, in the near future this number will grow towards 300 students. FSG Academy is also active in a number of areas abroad. Under our own label we have developed a food product for the top sport. The first contacts for export with China have been established.
